Depay's move to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona in January 2023 was seen as a fresh start for the talented forward. The transfer, worth €4 million (£3.41m/$4.34m), came after a challenging period at the Catalan club where he struggled to secure a regular spot in the starting lineup. However, things did not improve much and the Dutch forward, who had a contract set to expire in 2025, wrote a heartfelt post on social media expressing his gratitude towards the fans and staff for their support – indicating that his time at the Wanda Metropolitano is over.
