Spurs are reportedly in the hunt for a new goalkeeper with Ajax’s Andre Onana on their list of potential new recruits for the summer.
Per a report from the Daily Mail, the 23-year-old is ready to quit the Dutch League.
What’s the word?
Claims made by the newspaper suggest Onana could be available for between £40m-£50m this summer, a considerable sum of money for any goalkeeper.
The stopper is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League and in particular, Tottenham.
However, it won’t be straightforward with Chelsea also in the hunt for the 23-year-old as they seek a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga. Apparently the Blues are his preferred destination.
It’s been suggested that Barcelona have already been in contact with Onana over a possible move to the Nou Camp.
Inconsistent but well thought of
Onana is quickly rising in stock following Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals last term, where they were knocked out by the club chasing him – Spurs.
Over the two legs, the goalkeeper was very much in indifferent form, earning a match rating from WhoScored of 7 in the first outing. He won two aerial battles, made one save and was also victorious with a solitary claim.
However, in the second leg, there was an individual error as he cost his side dear with Spurs going on to reach the final.
That being said, he is still particularly young for a goalkeeper and has earned impressive reviews, including one from the great Manuel Neuer. The German claimed he was Onana’s biggest fan in May of 2019.
There is still a long way for the Cameroon international to progress in the game but with Hugo Lloris now 33 years of age, he could be the man to dislodge a player who was a favourite of Mauricio Pochettino.
Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countries these famous players have represented?
The Frenchman played 103 Premier League matches from 2016/17 to the end of the 2018/19 campaign and was a stalwart of that particular era in north London.
Signing a goalkeeper like Onana, who has been a regular in the Champions League, could represent a changing of the guard.
After all, Lloris hasn’t been shy of making individual errors while he also faced a spell out of the team with injury this season.
Meanwhile, Spurs COULD SIGN someone who was previously compared to Dybala…
